The week in nuclear and climate news

Putin's "invulnerable"nuclear-powered missile lost at sea. Joins the rest of Russia's nuclear junk there, and could be leaking radiation.

Jonathon Porritt and 60 other Britishence between an  writers, politicians and academics condemn the concept of a "balanced debate" about human-caused climate change. "Balance implies equal weight. But this then creates a false equivaloverwhelming scientific consensus and a lobby, heavily funded by vested interests, that exists simply to sow doubt to serve those interests."

AUSTRALIA

Well, suddenly we have a new Prime Minister -  "S coal mo"  - i.e Scott Morrison. We all feared that we would get that truly dreadful man Peter Dutton. But now - we have "Dutton in sheep's clothing". Believe me, Morrison will be just as bad -   same policies, just a bit more intelligent in spinning them.

And the new Cabinet?  A motley crew of climate denialists and pro nuclear proponents.

Aboriginal nation delays nuclear waste ballot

The Barngarla Aboriginal nation of South Australia have won a court action to delay a postal vote on a planned nuclear waste dump on their land.

The South Australian supreme court will hear the case next Thursday. The federal government has shortlisted Kimba in South Australia for Australia's future nuclear waste dump.

The Barngarla people, traditional owners of much of the Eyre Peninsula, won their injunction by arguing the ballot contravened the Racial Discrimination Act.

Their lawyers argued that the District Council of Kimba did not have the power to conduct the postal ballot, which was due to begin on Monday.

More of the same from new right-wing Australian prime minister

Australia’s day-old new far-right conservative prime minister, Scott Morrison, imprisoned more children in detention than any other immigration minister; he tried to increase sales tax, which would have pushed people already struggling to make ends meet further into poverty; he paraded a lump of coal in Parliament, as though the climate emergency is some kind of joke; and he's still campaigning to legalise discrimination against the LGBTIQA+ community.

Points raised by the grassroots campaigning group GetUp! after one of the messiest intra-party coups ever experienced in Australia. The best mainstream source I know for up-to-the-minute details of the political turmoil is the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, accessible here.

Traditional Aboriginal land owners “locked out” of nuclear waste dump vote

A South Australian cattle station that is part-owned by the state’s Liberal party director and located next to an Indigenous Protected Area has been provisionally selected as the site of Australia’s first nuclear waste dump, outraging traditional owners.

The head of the Adnyamathanha Traditional Lands Association (ATLA) says the majority of Adnyamathanha people have been denied a vote on a proposed radioactive waste management facility near the town of Hawker in the Flinders Rangers.

Hookina Waterhole (pictured) is a sacred Adnyamathanha site located 8km away from the proposed radioactive waste management facility at Wallerberdina Station, near Barndioota, in the Flinders Rangers, about 500km north of Adelaide, the state capital.

To 5th August - nuclear and climate news

6th August Hiroshima 9th August Nagasaki  - so far these anniversaries are being ignored by the media. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-07xiaBl2vk But not in Japan.   Japanese children will pass on the history of Nagasaki's horror nuclear bombing on 9 Aug 1945

The heatwave continues in the Northern hemisphere, but rarely is that awful left-wing term "climate change"mentioned in news reports. It's affecting all the Northern countries, though there is more news coverage about USA and Europe. Human-caused climate change made heat wave five times more likely.

Much nuclear news about the heatwave, too. The nuclear lobby's poster boy, France, is copping it, with nuclear reactors having further cuts to their production, their cooling systems being unable to cope. Other countries' reactors are similarly affected.

Spent nuclear fuel shipment from Sydney en route to France via South Australia

In a highly regulated and secretive transport operation in the early hours of 29 July the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) moved a shipment of spent fuel rods from the Lucas Heights reactor (near Sydney) to Port Kembla (in South Australia) en-route to reprocessing in France.

Long lived waste will be returned after reprocessing but the federal government still has no plan, process or place for advancing the management of this material.
