In recent months, the German government has attempted to fast-track changes to legislation that would allow several liquefied fossil gas (LNG) terminals to be built on Germany’s coastline. If the terminals are built, they will devastate the environment, and lock-in a dependence on fossil gas, fueling climate breakdown for decades to come.
In just 3 days, on 7 June, the Bundesrat (the body that represents Germany’s federal states) will vote to change the law to allow for those massive gas imports projects.
Daniel Günther, chair of the Bundesrat, has been unwilling to talk about the climate impact of the planned LNG terminals - one of which is to be built in his own state Schleswig-Holstein. It’s unlikely that we can influence outcome of the vote, but what we can do is shame him, and draw media and public attention to this hypocrisy.
