Über "Kriminalität", Schüsse in Exarchia und ein Festival

Capitalism is theft, impersonal violence and generalized terrorism, based on the exploitation oflabour, on police control and on economic extortion. The right to private property is a cover up of thisgreater theft. From our perspective, we are concerned about aimless damage against those who are inconditions of impoverishment, and even more about impersonal violence driven by economic motives andabout sexist attacks.Capitalism structurally produces outcast people. Today, the sweeping financial attack of the past fewyears as well as military interventions, have greatly increased the number of people who have no access tovital resources. It is to be expected that the number of people who, by their condition, cannot feel a sense ofcommunity with anyone and have no motive to distinguish between different levels of wealth other than theease with which they can satisfy their immediate needs, will increase. A fundamental expression of socialcannibalism is an expansive apathy.Exarchia is no exception. State propaganda focuses on “criminality” in this neighborhood, withoutever referring to specific evidence that points to a marked difference between Exarchia and any otherneighborhood. And when state propaganda focuses on its true enemy, on the resistance against repressionand on self­organization outside state institutions, then the magnitude of this targeted criminologicalpropaganda is blown out of all proportion. The purpose of this propaganda is to undermine the struggleagainst state repression and to incite for greater police occupation of the neighborhood. There is however, aparticularity regarding “criminality” in the area of Exarchia: the number of police forces concentrated hereis as high as it is in those areas where the state is at open conflict against the oppressed, as in the state'sborders and the prisons.The demand for more policing is intentional and stems from the most conservative reflexes. Can thepolice really suppress all those who are hungry or who in desperation fall into drug addiction? It never hasand it never will. Who wishes for an effective police? In other words, for the terror of the state's monopolyin violence, for torture, for the persecution and imprisonment of migrants and generally of the sociallyexcluded, for the aggravation of poverty and criminalization through the prison complex, for the dealings ofthe drug trade and mafia, for the protection of fascists and bosses and for preemptive counter­insurrection.The existence of the police stands as guarantor of a culture that reproduces exploitation and authoritarianviolence.Looking straight at the core of the problem, the answer must be given through the smashing ofevery kind of isolation. It is the struggle for communal life, against the plague of individualism. The publicspace of Exarchia is flooded by young people and migrants, and as such is safer than the deserted or mainlycommercial spaces of the urban prison, also because it has served, through the years, as a hub of resistance.The wave of restless and dispossessed people who flood the square, the pedestrian streets and the frontsteps of buildings, conveys the vibrancy and hope of a society without authority.The answer to the reproduction of injustice and of violence for profit is to be found in the kind ofsocial solidarity that opposes state institutions. The answer is to be found in the self­organization of opencommunities, in the militant reclaiming and re­appropriation of resources, in the building of collective self­defense against repression and against any attempt of exploitative imposition. Open Assembly AGAINST the POLICE OCCUPATION       +++ Gestern Abend wurde auf eine Polizeieinheit in Exarchia geschossen: +++ "Gunshots were fired at a riot police unit stationed outside the offices of PASOK in Exarchia, central Athens, on Monday evening, causing no injuries. It was the second such attack in recent months. 

According to police sources, three bullet shells were found on the ground near the junction of Harilaou Trikoupi and Didotou streets. 

Two officers in the riot police unit reported seeing a man approach them with his arm held out in front of him before firing five or six times at 7.45 p.m. 

The riot police unit guarding the PASOK offices had reportedly been given instructions to take extra safety precautions as there were fears of an imminent attack. 

In a written statement, Alternate Citizens’ Protection Minister Nikos Toskas said the Greek government will not “tolerate anyone placing the lives of police officers and citizens in danger.” 

The attack was widely condemned by political parties, with Democratic Alignment (PASOK) leader Fofi Genimata calling for the resignation of Toskas during a debate on Monday night between candidates for the leadership of a new center-left party. 

Main opposition New Democracy described the attack as “bullets against democracy” just a few days after an acrimonious debate in Parliament between its leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras over the government’s shortcomings in implementing law and order. 

The show put on by Tsipras in Parliament, the statement said, cannot “hide the magnitude of the problems which he himself has provoked.” 

To Potami leader Stavros Theodorakis also called for the resignation of the “dangerously incompetent” Toskas. For its part, the government described the attack as a “provocation.”
