The German way to fight climate crisis?

Abstract:
In recent months, the German government has attempted to fast-track changes to legislation that would allow several liquefied fossil gas (LNG) terminals to be built on Germany’s coastline. If the terminals are built, they will devastate the environment, and lock-in a dependence on fossil gas, fueling climate breakdown for decades to come. In just 3 days, on 7 June, the Bundesrat (the body that represents Germany’s federal states) will vote to change the law to allow for those massive gas imports projects. Daniel Günther, chair of the Bundesrat, has been unwilling to talk about the climate impact of the planned LNG terminals - one of which is to be built in his own state Schleswig-Holstein. It’s unlikely that we can influence outcome of the vote, but what we can do is shame him, and draw media and public attention to this hypocrisy.

What’s more: the locations for the terminals haven’t yet been officially approved. As long as they haven’t been built, we have an opportunity to stop the plans in their tracks and support the local communities who are starting to push back.

Send a message to Daniel Günther and the Federal Council to demand they take the climate crisis seriously, and reject the planned construction of the LNG terminals!

We know that coal, oil and gas must remain in the ground everywhere if we want to stop the worst of the climate crisis. Fracking for fossil gas has already been banned in Germany, but the government wants to build these terminals to import more fracked gas from the US. Communities near the fracking sites will be left with poisoned water and earthquakes, and we'll all suffer lasting climate impacts.

Instead of investing in new fossil infrastructure and importing more gas, the German government needs to make urgent progress towards an equitable transition to 100% renewable energy, which will benefit communities everywhere. The school strikers from Fridays for Future have been loud and clear in demanding a liveable, safe future on this planet. If we come together and raise our voices, we can hold our politicians accountable and ensure they take the climate crisis seriously.

Help scandalise this decision and make it clear to the members of the Bundesrat that their plans will lead to climate devastation!

With conviction,
